President/CEO @ Greater Jackson Chamber | Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Leader

In the chamber and economic development business, we often talk about "standing on the shoulders of giants" or people who came before us who set the stage for today's success. This story about Ed Coyne and the linked obituary, tells the story about how Tennalum came to Jackson. As I read the story it became very apparent that the most important part of economic development has remained unchanged for at least the past 35 years----relationships are the key to success. John D. Graham and Ed Coyne had a relationship that led to the location of an operation that has employed hundreds and represents millions of dollars of capital investment. One of our relationship principles is do business with people you know, like, and trust. That approach was successful thirty years ago and still drives our success today.#economicdevelopment#jacksontn#tennesseeKaiser Aluminumhttps://lnkd.in/e7G-_8ys

We are Celebrating Day 4 of Ohio History Month by honoring the trailblazing inventor Garrett A. Morgan, also known as the Black Edison. Born on March 4, 1877, in Paris, Kentucky, Morgan's journey led him to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he initially worked in a sewing machine factory, gaining insights into its mechanics. Motivated by innovation, he patented improvements to the sewing machine and established his repair shop.Later, Morgan moved to Cleveland, Ohio, with his second wife. In 1909, he inadvertently discovered a hair-straightening effect while experimenting with a chemical solution to reduce sewing machine friction. This discovery led to the founding of the G.A. Morgan Refining Company, providing a path for him to achieve upward mobility. In 1914, Morgan patented the safety hood, a pivotal invention that contributed to developing World War II gas masks. Notably, he was the first Black person in Cleveland to own an automobile. Witnessing a carriage accident inspired him to create a traffic signal with a warning light, in which he later sold the rights of the invention to General Electric for $40,000.Morgan's legacy as a prolific inventor continued until his passing, with a DNA enriched by a passion for innovation. Let's also acknowledge other notable inventors like Granville Woods, Sarah E. Goode, and Ula O. Carter, whose groundbreaking inventions have left a lasting impact on history. #OhioHistoryMonth #BlackHistoryisOhioHistory #Innovation #BlackInventors 🚀✨

🚦 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐭 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧: 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬 🚦Meet Garrett Morgan, a remarkable Black inventor with only an elementary school education. Despite his humble beginnings, he left an indelible mark on history.Morgan's inventions spanned from an improved sewing machine to the life-saving gas mask. But perhaps one of his most influential innovations was the enhanced traffic light. In the 1920s, he introduced one of the first three-light systems, laying the foundation for the traffic lights we rely on today. Morgan's inspiration struck when he witnessed a severe car accident in Cleveland, Ohio. As a response, he added a "yield" component, alerting drivers of an impending stop.In 1923, he patented this ingenious creation, making our roads safer for generations to comeGarrett Morgan's legacy reminds us that brilliance knows no bounds, and even a simple idea can change the world. The simple rules to success by Arnold Swartzenegger. Ever met a self-made millionaire who didn't have a guiding set of principles? Me neither. I stumbled upon Arnold Schwarzenegger's rules for success recently, and let me tell you, it's game-changing. From an Austrian boy with big dreams to becoming the world's most iconic bodybuilder and a successful Hollywood actor and politician, Arnold's journey is undeniably inspirational. But what captivates me most isn't just his success, it's his blueprint - the unwavering commitment to his goals, resilience in the face of adversity, his relentless pursuit of learning, and his firm belief in giving back to society. These are not just rules - they are powerful life lessons. PS. check out 🔔 for a winning pitch deck the template created by Silicon Valley legend, Peter Thiel https://lnkd.in/ejp-Bhnu

The Myth of the Self-Made ManArnold Schwarzenegger’s viral commencement speech to the graduating class at the University of Houston recently resurfaced on my feed. His key idea is “The Self-Made (Person) is a Myth”. We all stand on the shoulders of those who have come before. We become who we are because people – family, friends, mentors, and colleagues – were generous enough to steer us, support us, believe in us, promote us, and work hard for us. Recognizing others’ contributions to one’s success doesn’t diminish accomplishments, it amplifies them. It speaks to a self-awareness and humility that should be critical traits in all leaders. In our “cult of personality” culture, we tend to attribute great accomplishments to a single individual. All too often, that individual buys into the myth, and their view of the world is distorted by the lens of their own perceived greatness and infallibility, diminishing what made them great in the first place.Reflecting on the journeys of two lauded self-made men from the past and present reinforces Schwarzenegger’s key theme:John D. Rockefeller – Rockefeller was encouraged to study mathematics, learn a strong work ethic, and embrace charity by his parents. His first business was started jointly with his neighbor who invested two thousand dollars in the partnership. His oil refining business was made possible because of the previous decades of inventions and developments in drilling and refining by several ingenious inventors and engineers. There is no question he had a unique drive, a brilliant mind, and a tremendous appetite for well calculated risk. Was he a self-made man?Elon Musk – Musk comes from a wealthy South African family, who afforded him the best education and exposed him to entrepreneurship from an early age. He invested in Tesla after the company was founded by Eberhard and Tarpenning who developed the early technology. The production of the first Tesla roadster was stewarded by tech veteran Ze’ev Drori, and the US Department of Energy provided Tesla with a $465M loan in 2009. There is no question that Musk has a broad and audacious vision, a genius sense of timing for technology arcs, and the ability to capture public imagination like no other. Was he a self-made man?Recognizing the contributions of those that help us doesn’t make us less, it makes us more. It helps us understand the power of doing the same in our communities. Schwarzenegger’s ability to capture this in such a compelling way is a testament to his self-awareness and sense of gratitude.Who would you thank for helping you get to where you are?#gratitude #leadership #teamculture
